Its earth dam is recognised as the largest in Europe.
The history of the lake…
The region experienced a succession of destructive floods due to the Durance.
Faced with these devastated landscapes, the decision was taken to build a dam on the Serre Ponçon site in 1955 to control the flow of its waters.
The works were completed in 1961.

Some sacrifices were necessary for the construction of the dam, such as the disappearance of the villages of Savines and Ubaye, but it also enabled the construction of infrastructures such as the Savine bridge (950 m), viaducts… and the “re-birth” of the village of Savine-le-lac.
The Dam provides a gigantic water reserve for Provençal agriculture, but also a hydroelectric activity that supplies several hydroelectric power stations, connected by a canal to the Mediterranean (1,270 million m3).
In addition, the dam has an important tourist vocation for the region since it offers a lake where water activities and sports are popular and appreciated.

The creation of leisure infrastructure around the lake allows for significant and dynamic summer activity around the leisure centres:

Water sports and leisure activities are the key words of this huge playground thanks to the favourable climate of the Hautes-Alpes: mildness, sun and summer heat in the heart of our mountains
- Windsurfing and kitesurfing: thermal winds allowing for optimal practice
- Seven French sailing schools for the safe practice of sailing, catamaran, dinghy and water skiing
- family and friendly activities around towed buoys, wakeboarding, pedal boating, stand up paddle boarding
- routes organised by the leisure centres on the lake in the mild and calm morning for sea kayaking and rowing, to explore the bays
- coves that are only accessible via the lake can be discovered thanks to the rental of electric or motor boats without a licence, or canoes
- sightseeing boats offer you a “mini cruise” with a guided tour, passing by the Serre Ponçon dam, the “St Michel” chapel and the Savines bridge of the “Demoiselles Coiffées” rock formation.
- a famous beach, St Michel Bay : the beach located opposite the islet overlooking the St Michel chapel. You can have a picnic there, or go for a ride in a canoe kayak, pedal boat, have fun on the towed buoys or try water skiing.
- many beaches have been equipped for the comfort of the whole family with supervised swimming and catering in some cases (15 minutes from the campsite)
